Isang Araw Lang: A Movie Review

Isang Araw Lang: (Just One Day)
At the first thought you might be wondering what does the story is all about and why they come up to this title. Isang araw lang, is actually an advocacy of Kuya Daniel Razon, which focus on helping people and doing public service and to start it in just one day. It was shown last July 2009 at the PICCPlenary hall in Pasay City. It was also aired on local television which is UNTV last April 8, 2012. But it still not too late for you if you still have not seen the movie yet. It was called an “indie film” for it was not shown nationwide in the mainstream film industry and it was produced not for business purposes. On the other hand, foreigners who come to watch this were very delighted for it was able to show its message and advocacy through the film. You don’t need a high-cost production if your objective is not only for entertainment, rather sharing morale to people. In my observation, there are many fictional movies that people love to see, but this movie was produced with good intentions not to earn money for them. I was overwhelmed for this project because the proceeds of these are for the La Verdad students. There are students who are eager to study despite having been insufficient with finances and monetary needs. Because of this, Bro. Eli and Bro. Daniel spear-headed the establishment of La VerdadChristian College, which offers free tuition fees, uniforms, books and even free meals for its students. The students surely benefit much from this project.
About the story of Isang Araw Lang, there is a man named Kuya Daniel, jeepney driver who works hard to sustain the needs of his adopted orphans. He is a man that shows public service to people. He also had his side-kick named Johnny, the man that seems quite reckless and accident-prone but his character also added comedy in the story. Kuya Daniel helps people in need, though there are times it means sacrificing his part of the labor he had given, he still do it without complaints. The orphans were treated lovingly, they go to school, and they have food to eat and a home to dwell in. But most importantly they were taught by Kuya Daniel. He discusses to the children that they must always behave. Just like in real life, villains and antagonists are always present in every story. First, there is the man who had always wanted to end up the brotherly-kindness of Kuya Daniel, Ka RenĂ©, played by Ka Rene in real life. His aim is to take advantage of the members of their small organization. Besides him, there is also Congressman Ricardo, portrayed by a good veteran actor Rey “PJ” Abellana, who is involved in a syndicate that enslaves children and he is also a man engaged in different unlawful activities. He organized a so called “charitable” program for the orphans, including the ones that Kuya takes care of; unfortunately it was all for publicity and self-aggrandizement. Of course this is not what Kuya wanted so he stopped the evil plans of the congressman. The antagonist of the story makes a way to continue his sinister plans so he kidnapped the poor children and even Kuya Daniel. The Good Samaritan was tortured and beaten-up, however he did not avenged his oppressors. With the help of an old friend who is a soldier that Kuya met in the army, Colonel Cuevas a role portrayed by a good actor Emilio Garcia, helped Kuya to free the children and teach Congressman Ricardo a lesson.
It a must-see film because it is full of moral and virtues. So, bored and tired of watching Sci-Fi movies? This is the time to call the attention of your whole family for this is worth watching. A kid in elementary grade will watch the movie and get the essence of it; it is a movie for the young, the old and the middle-aged! Maybe the whole story did not happened in real life. But I can assure you, that public service which was been continually working by Kuya Daniel Razon and Bro.Eli Soriano will probably justify what you have seen in the movie. They conduct an –everyday free clinic, maintain a free-tuition school, and they keep a transient house which benefitted a lot of homeless people. They are propagating the words of God that helped people in different ways and situation. As a movie watcher you, yourself can proved how the Goodness of God poured to these two men. In such way they pay it forward to many people who are helpless. A movie or a reality of life, most definitely, public service and kindness to others, especially the less-fortunate must always be the core principle of our everyday lives.

THE BLIND SIDE: A MOVIE REVIEW ON THE STORY OF MICHAEL OHER

People are hooked watching movies, even if it is not realistic. We are accustomed of stories like The Avengers; the vampire stories which are very mainstream especially the one involving the relationship between a woman and a man living in the underworld who has supernatural abilities. However, there are movie lovers like me who is fond of watching “true to life stories” or “based-on a true story” types of film. Each one of us can relate ourselves on the movies we watched. According to Tony Schwartz’s theory “resonance”, when someone watched television, listen to a radio or even see an advertisement if we found out that we can easily get to relate ourselves and remember something in the past that match what we see, there is a resonance. Now why do I tell this? It’s just because I can also remember things from my past when I watch a certain film and maybe you too experienced it. If you are a sports lover, I am sure whether you are successful or not in the field you are into, you will definitely love the film by John LeeHancock. But do not you, those who are not very much in to sports will also embrace this good movie produced.
A heartfelt, mellow-dramatic and a must-see film, entitled “The Blind Side” casting SandraBullock, Tim McGraw and Aaron Quintana. The latter portrayed the role of Michael Oher, a football player, whose big bulk and ample physique enables him to strike and knock-out his adversaries with great ease. He is now a successful football player who was officially adopted by Mrs. Leigh Anne and Mr. Sean Tuohy. They are also the reason for Oher’s scholarship at The University ofMississippi or Ole Miss. He is also lucky to be with the children of the Touhy couple, SJ played by Jae- Head and Collins played by Lily Collins. The chronological arrangement of the movie was plotted perfectly and elaborately. Ever since, I was always touched by a family-oriented story, just like “The Blind Side” which was actually based on the book “The Blind Side: Evolution of a game” was written by Michael Lewis. It showed that there are still people in the society who are not after the physical appearance or the culture of who they will lend their help to. The moral of the story taught me to be more sensitive with others’ social status in life and to have the need to help others without any favor in return. Football is a game in America which is intently for man with a strong-build up. Having a clear mind is also needed in order to win and compete fully strong. There are also mockers not only in the audience but also in the actual game. Your opponents will try to turn you down so that you will lose your concentrations; “stick and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” quoted Mrs. Touhy. Words are always a deadly weapon. These are the common scenarios; Michael Oher is facing difficulties when he is in the game. At first, he encounters failure. He is always aggressive but his actions were in a wrong move. With the help of SJ Touhy, he was trained in a one-on one football lesson. The success of the story will not be complete without the woman who is very compassionate in helping Michael Oher. She is dedicated, eager and loving who wanted to teach someone and also learn back from that someone. Had it not been for Ms. Leigh Ann Touhy, Michael will always stays as if he see himself as nothing. The character of Mrs. Touhy that had always been at Michael’s back especially on his downsides showed how a loving parent is. The role was been justified with the acting of Bullock, whose performance touched my heart. She has been in different roles and different character approaches but she is a winner for me in this film. Professionally played but not too stiffed, she showed the real Ms. Tuohy and on how it act as a supportive parent with her kids. The supporting roles also of her husband, Sean was just appropriate for the character given to Tim McGraw. You will also like the acting of Jae-Head for he is funny and witty.
I hope that I did not spoil your moment in order to see the film. You might be guessing and eventually trying to come up on a bunch of answers why the film was entitled “The Blind Side” when you finished watching the movie; it is easy to conclude and agree of the title. But what if it had different meanings? I had kept my thoughts on how it was entitled; I figured it out of the box. Every successful player has their own story, maybe it is boring for others but it is worth for some people. We are in a cycle in which sometimes we are blind to see what we can share and teach others, and most of the time we learned from them. I hope you will enjoy the movie “The Blind Side” and as you watch it, carefully listen to the voice over because sometimes it seems unimportant. But Sandra Bullock has a clue to say that is related to the whole story. She says “to protect the quarter back of what he can’t see, to protect his blind side.”

Praise Song

PUSO KONG NABUKSAN

Sa pagtila ng ulan, lungkot ay nararamdaman
Oh kay bigat nitong damdamin,
Isip ay naglalakbay, ‘di malaman kung saan
Patutungo itong aking buhay
Ako’y nawalay kay tagal sa Iyo, Oh Maykapal
Puso ko’y buksan at Ikaw ay Manahan

Kailan kaya masisilayan pagbuhos ng ulan?
Kailan makakamit pag-ibig Mong walang hanggan
Kaya’t ako’y nagsusumamo
Dinggin mo ang aking dasal
Dalangin na ang puso ko’y buksan

Kayrami ng kasalanan
Kayrami kong pagkukulang
Ilang ulkt ikaw  ay nasaktan
Ngunit  laging nariyan Ka

Kaya’t akoy nagsusumamo
Tanggapin ang aking alay
Pasasalamat ng puso kong nabuksan

A song which is composed by Mr. Domingo Rosco and interpreted by Ms. Catherine Loria is one of the finalist in the last A Song Of Praise (ASOP) music festival held at Smart Araneta Coliseum last September 24, 2012. The song also won as "song of the month" last May 2012. The song ranked as 2nd runner up in the said competition. This is just another heart-felt song that aims to glorify our God.

I. The persona is expressing how he feels. Maybe he is lost of his life and felt uncontrollable with the situation. He felt helpless and needs a shoulder to lean on. His direction is leading to nowhere perhaps because of his environment and he has been affected by the environment setting.
Refrain: he was living for a long time without communicating with God. Perchance he did not even pray and thanked Him. He was lost for a long time that is why he asks for God’s mercy and to be in his life again, he is asks God to open his heart into a hope of a new beginning.
Chorus: I think that the persona is referring to blessing when he mentioned the word “ulan”, he is wondering when he will see the blessing of the Lord or the hope He will bring. He is also asking when he will receive God’s eternal love. Then the last stanza says that he is begging for his prayers to be heard, and that the Lord will open his heart.
II. The words were chosen carefully, though it did not discuss further and tell the whole scenario. He is saying that he had committed many mistakes; He had done a lot of transgressions. So it is clear that the persona is a sinner. He even admits that he hurt the Lord. We know that when we disobey the Lord’s commandments and His words we actually hurt Him. On the other hand he revealed that even if he is a man who had been reckless, he still felt God’s presence. Lord never and will never ignore the plea of His servants. The words show His loving-kindness that sometimes we fail to see. There are also people who forget that there is someone up there who always show His mercy and grace.
Refrain:  On the next refrain, the persona is now telling that God heard his prayers and his heart was open.
** He now received God’s loving-kindness, he now sees how blessings and hope was showered in his life and that the Lord poured mercy on him. That is why he is now begging, that the Lord accept him for he offers his sacrifice of thanksgiving to God. He was overwhelmed because it was a fulfillment for him that his heart was open for a new beginning that is a new life with the Lord. The last stanza on the song which the persona is repeating, is giving emphasis on how grateful he is, and thankful to Him. He appreciated God’s work on his life.

What’s in a name with Vincent: A Song Review

Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Perhaps they'll listen now.

Colors changing hue, morning field of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

Perhaps they'll listen now.

You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.

Like the strangers that you've met,
The ragged men in the ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

They would not listen, they're not listening still.
Perhaps they never will...

The First stanza describes the art of Vincent. His approach on colors is more of dark, and full of sorrow. The words “palette blue and grey” looks dim, which is contrast on the next lines that says “look out on a summer’s day.” This is ironic on what he actually feels and what he paints.  Vincent paints more of nature.
The persona talking on the chorus can be Don Mclean, he somehow see himself on Vincent’s situation. People misunderstood Vincent because even if was sane, people thought he was out of his mind.
On the second stanza, it shows how Vincent would paint the lovely things he sees and then he will make it stunning. The lyric also says that “colors changing hue”, I think that as an artist it changed the life of Vincent.
I guess that this is the highlighted part on the song (the third stanza). Don Mclean expressed that people cannot accept Vincent who he was and what he become as an artist, despite of showing the real him. And when he had no hope at all he committed suicide. And Mclean had a comparison between Vincent and the side of the lovers, because we had observed that when a lover fails or suffer from frustrations he ends up his life. I think that Vincent is a lover of art, and when that time came that he can no longer accept that people treated him as a crazy man. It was an epic failure for him that triggers him to leave the world. The last stanza connotes that Vincent doesn’t deserve this cruel world for he is a very talented man that was unappreciated.

In an overall assessment, Vincent Van Gogh is a post-impressionist. When we say impressionism it is a form of art that is systematic and organized. Van Gogh together with his colleague wanted to make their own style of art. NapoleonBonaparte wanted the artist to paint inside the box which Van Gogh and his companion does not adhere to. Their works were not included every time there is a painting exhibit. They are referred as “rebels” because of their movement that aims not to have rules in art.
The song touches my heart because I can relate into Van Gogh’s situation wherein there are some things that that you worked hard for and put a big effort to but still people do not even take a notice of it. I think Don Mclean as a singer and composer relates to Vincent, in his situation. He as an artist also faces failure that comes along the way. With his composition, he tells the story of a man unappreciated and the words that were chosen fits on the story of Vincent. It gives a deep meaning in the heart of the audience. Starry, starry night refers to the painting of Vincent, the ibid and distinct colors that he used expressing how he really feels living as an artist. The painting seems uninteresting for the people who don’t give a little time understanding the artist point of view. On the other hand, for the artist it is a masterpiece created with passion and love. “They would not listen, they did not know how. Perhaps they never will.” These were the line that was repeated all over the song, but as you can notice “perhaps they listen now” is repeated twice which can imply that maybe these people will understand. The last stanza and the last words says “they never will” it emphasize that people won’t give attention on an artistic work for they think that is unusual to their likeness. This also denotes that maybe there wouldn’t come a time for the people to hear Vincent’s artistry because he now rest in peace.
In my perspective, we have different talents and gifts that we must treasure. We are blessed to have these things for we can share it to others. But on the other hand we must also understand that we cannot please everyone. Even if you do what is right, some people have a say to it. We must keep developing our talents despite of the defamatory that wants to put us down. I also think it is inappropriate to end up our life because we are just unaccepted by the public. The moment we are given another day to live is another hope to cherish and be thankful for.

Defining a Hero

Defining a Hero

Who is your hero? The question perhaps is easy to answer; this is because each one of us may have our own definition of a hero. My mother is one of the people I look up to, she does not have mental telepathy nor does she have the capacity to lift a building, but she is a hero to me. She has her own superpowers that recharges everyday and love that asks for no return. In our present time, different people can be called heroes in their own little way. Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW’s) are new breeds of heroes, their sacrifices and labor helps our economy to survive. Through these examples, we can say that our personal choice is a proof that our perspectives in life defines and determines the qualification we set for our personal hero. In a more profound context, personal choices may have helped us to determine who our hero is, but what does it take to be a National Hero?
The Philippines through the years of fighting for its freedom and sovereignty discovered heroism. MelchoraAquino helped the Katipuneros by feeding them and aiding them during the war. Her house served as sanctuary for wounded soldiers. Apolinario Mabini, the “brain of the Katipunan” served as the thinking weapon and asset during their strategic arm-struggle. The late President Corazon Aquino or simply Tita Cory is the epitome of a modern hero and a freedom-fighter. She earned her title “Mother of Democracy” as she led the EDSA Revolution in 1986 and ended the Dictatorship of the Marcos Regime. Having said all these qualities, the examples given all qualified for the title hero. But what set of standards do we give before one is recognized as the Philippines’ National Hero?
Dr. Jose Rizal has been declared as the Philippines National Hero. Perhaps, during our elementary days, we dare not question why Dr. Rizal is our national hero. We simply believed it as a general fact that we must whole-heartedly accept and bare in mind. However, growing up, we are introduced to several concepts and point of views that somehow antagonizes Rizal’s being the national Hero of the Philippines. For some, they would argue on how Rizal does not deserve the title because of his Western influences and ideological background as he has studied in Europe. His primary contribution is his fight for freedom not using a sword, but a pen to awaken and educate the people of the truth and provoke the patriotism in their heart, but because of his Western influence, his contribution did not seem to be as pure as he intended. This leads to an augmenting argument on who deserves the title better. Andres Bonifacio, founder of the Katipunan is the closest and most popular choice of some to have deserved Rizal’s title. Andres Bonifacio is considered as a true-blooded Filipino who has no foreign stain in his ideology. He led the Katipunan and actively fought in his arm-struggles to oust the colonizer and earn the Philippines’ freedom. Both men, Rizal and Bonifacio exemplified their love for the country, in two opposite ways.
Rizal has great passion and unending love for the country. His works of novels and poems are now used not just for the academic purposes but it is a tool used to sharpen the minds of the people. Through writing you can best shed light on your point of view. True enough, he did not led arm struggles and battles of warfare, but he did his own fight through his knowledge. In this we can say, violence is not the only answer. Despite his passivity he made a great impact through educating the people and informing them of the ills and malevolence of Spanish colonizers, especially the Friars. Through his writing, he gave birth to Filipinos who are not afraid to express their feelings. They need not guns to fight for their freedom they are simply aided with witty insights and their gift of words to let others know what they believe in, Rizal through his actions promoted writing scholarship, peace and patriotism. People may argue that Bonifacio was the one who had lead his way to recapture our sovereignty, but to me, Rizal did something that reiterated to the minds of the people up to this very generation, he nourished our minds of his knowledge. I can therefore say that Rizal deserves his title because he did not just help free the country, he freed the minds of the people, and one way or the other, he liberated us into the truth that we all are privileged now.
