GOOD REASONS TO STAY

Sir Winston Churchill once said “A Pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; and optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”This quotation caught my interest when I was starting to write this article. Sometimes when things don’t go the way we wanted it, the usual thing that we resort to is quitting. After you have detached yourself, you remorse on the opportunity you have just wasted and soon you realize how hard you worked for it and now you feel sorry for not grabbing the chance. We have to bear in mind that not every door of opportunities and window of chances will always be easy to grab, because there are times that they closes in an instant without you realizing it is already over. On the other hand, maybe you are not qualified for the requirements, for the simple reason that some chances knock only once and when you’ve let it pass, it is gone for a lifetime. So, if the chance is offered, why don’t you give it a try? For instance, institutions and schools that are free from charges do not mushroom just about everywhere. People would reckon that nowadays, education has been a privilege and not a right, education and the quality once are unbearably expensive. Scholars, who are given the chance to study for free, are lucky indeed. However, there are still schools despite providing scholarship for needy students would still ask for some payments and fees of little amount in order to compromise the education of scholars. But there are schools that would take it literally, FREE TUITION FEE, and not ask for a single cent from the students. This is Dr. Jose Rizal’s dream; to give the Filipino youth free quality education. Nevertheless, a clearer example would be that of La Verdad Christian College, which Bro. Eli Soriano and Kuya DanielRazon came up with, a full-scholarship program. La Verdad Christian College is now continuously operated in Apalit, Pampanga and Caloocan City. Hundreds of applicants were applying to be one of the fortunate scholars who will benefit from the perks and services of the scholarship program.
I was very fortunate when my name is included in the list of the upcoming students for academic year 2012-2013. Way back I was working as a volunteer in a documentary program in a local TV station, studying is really out of my priority. Although I am not that kind of person who is a going-to-school-for-nothing-to-ponder-upon type of student, but I think that I am fine and can work without a tertiary degree. I was wrong, as we encounter different people and interact with them, college as I now realize is very important then. To give a background, I already applied before in La Verdad Christian College (supposedly I am on my second year) but when I found out I passed the exams and requirements, I refuse to leave my work. Again, second chance was given to me for I was able to take another slot as a scholar. Surprised and happy how I felt when I first received the message from the registrar’s office. From my first semester and now that I am in the nearing end of classes, I learned a lot in my studies. I had adjustments because I was out of school for nearly three years, so I almost forgot the curriculum in a class. Academic is not only the main objective of the institution, rather it taught us values and morals that we can use even after we graduate. My 7 months in La Verdad seems very fast but at the same time it feels like I stayed for so long, because of the good teachings I kept in my heart.
When I am alone and I try to assess things, there are times I felt that I am not that deserving but still I have to study hard. I know that my financial crisis is one of the key factors why I was accepted as a scholar. In addition, my one instructor said that the aim of La Verdad is to give chances to students who are unable to pay for tuitions but is willing and committed to study. That is the principle of the Chairman Emeritus, Bro. Eli and Vice Chairman, Kuya Daniel to help those in need without taking anything in return. I believed that we, as students have our different purposes when we had the chance to study and these chances must not be taken for granted or wasted. I feel that I was not just a learner but a teacher as well. We have to extend our hands for our classmates or schoolmates who are in need. At the end of the day I ask myself, did I just act as a student or have I lend any help from others. Sometimes I feel that this is a burden to worry yourself for the sake of others but there is happiness inside me that in a little way I assist them I see them striving to continue and finish their tasks. Thank God for this opportunity to help others and be helped by others as well, Thank God for the founders of the school who help students to be productive and in the most genuine manner had uplift the true meaning of scholarship in the academe.

Coping with Changes

“Persistence is the true meaning of scholarship, I have always believed in that. In order to succeed in life, you must be persevering.” Justine Nico Hernandez Vigonte, a proud Iskolar ng Bayan, studying Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communication, has seen his career path as something that one must work hard for. He is now in his second year in the University of the Philippines Manila. Studying in UP according to Justine was not really his dream rather he wanted to be a Blue Eagle student. He aimed to study in Ateneo De Manila University, unfortunately he was not able to take the Ateneo College Entrance Test or ACET. When he graduated from UP his target job position will be as a Marketing Manager in fields such as clothing and textile, pharmaceutical and telecommunications, he aims to work at the biggest companies in the countries like Globe, Unilever Philippines and P&G. For Justine, his college life is a very different experience compared to that when he was still in high school. He had really big adjustments when it comes to coping with the different atmosphere in college. “I was culture-shocked, because people are very different and diverse.” He said that he needs to be very open to interacting with others with various characteristics in terms of socializing.
Justine was born on the 14th of September 1994. His parents are Mr. Robert Sison- Vigonte and Mrs. Criselda Hernandez Vigonte. Justine love music very well, it feels like that it is his outlet. Whenever he is happy or not in the mood, singing will always be part of his life. His favorite singers are Celine Dion, Lady Gaga and Josh Groban. When it comes to movies, he loves Les Miserables, I am Number Four, Pitch Perfect and the Harry Potter series. On the other hand, his favorite genres of books are fantasy and about drama. He already read The Alchemist, The Perfect Insult for Every Occasion: Lady Snark’s Guide to common discourtesy, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Justine believed that watching good movies and reading hard-bound novels contributes a lot to his part as a communicator. Although he thought that he is well equipped, he faced a lot of adjustments as he told me. “I was very surprised how hard it was to study in college, I needed to be very open into interacting with others in terms of studies, I have to be more responsible.” He had done a lot of effort to cope up with the situation. His study habits include going to library and reading books, he also stays late at night to focus on his assignments and projects. When I asked him about quitting his studies, he answered that he almost thought of saying goodbye to his Alma Matter. He was really pressured in maintaining good grades and with the expectations all around him. According to Just, he learned to like his course, because he only chose it by chance. He doesn’t really know what Organizational Communication or OrCom was, but as soon as he studied the course he found that there are many opportunities in the workplace.
Justine will stick to his belief that quitting will never be a good option. In order to reach your dreams you need to strive hard. He also gives advices to his fellow students who experience the same grief he had. He will be on his third year and hopes to finish the four-year course with flying colors. All of his effort will be worth it, for this thing keeps him pursuing. He will always be inspired by his family, who were very supportive of him.

CLW: A Week to Remember

Most of the school, celebrates monthly festive. There are some familiar parties such as April fool’s, Friendship day in the Unites States. However, Filipino students are used to “Language Month” which is remembered every August. Different categories are presented like speech choir, slogan, poster making, photo, and essay contests. There are also Science month, wherein the students emulate their favorite scientist. They produce special projects and inventions, but as the students leave their early stages of studying and step up for the next level, some of the old stuff was also forgotten.  Some would think that these things were only meant for elementary and high school students. On the other hand, what should we realize is the camaraderie that is being build up with each competition.
LaVerdad Christian College-Caloocan, celebrated their Christian Living week last January 28 to February 1 of this year. Since the name of the school itself is Christian, Christian Living subject is also part of the school’s curriculum. Each sections from 1st year to 2nd year participated in this healthy competition, while 3rd year students were part of the organizing committee. The organizing heads were also the CL instructors, Mr. Jensen Sobrejuanite, and Ms. Sharon Jacinto and the other instructors as well. The theme is entitled B.I.B.L.E. To start the first day (Monday) of the week, each participant is obliged to present their cheering entries; this is also the time for the organizers to give their instructions and briefing for the succeeding days. The faces of the instructors and students were really happy when the day ends. Tuesday, is the poster making contest and the submission of the photos for photo contest. Wednesday is intended for last general practices of the participants. Thursday is one of the awaited events, because of the chorale, Christian dance contests, as well as Bible Preaching category, Bible Quiz Bee, and Solo singing Contest. Each one really prepared for this from costume to their performances. The last day is Friday, in which the category is dressing up with modest apparel. There is also a new activity which is ASOP or A Song of Praise music festival. Twelve participants joined the competition, some of the song writers also performed the piece they wrote. The judges are as follows, Dr. Mon Del Rosario (composer); he is also one of the judges of ASOPTV. Another judge is from UNTV, an entertainment reporter and ASOPTV talent coordinator named Adjes Carreon. The two others were from Members Church of God International. They are Bro. Roger, division choir mentor and Bro. Guiller Dumaran a church worker. All of the judges were pleased on how the students performed and executed their parts.
The main objective of the CL week is for the students to realize how a good character must possess. The Administrator, Ms. Johna P. Bautista said that these teachings that the students acquired in the competition must lasts for a lifetime. Way back in the first day of the school orientation, the facilitator reiterates that intellectual knowledge will not matter if the student lacks of good moral character. The school’s aim only shows that the founders who are Bro. Eli Soriano and Kuya Daniel Razon wants their students not just to be academically good but to produce students who are God-fearing and not liabilities of the society.

DEAR KUYA: MORE FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES

Heart-broken, frustrated, weary, sorrowed. Are you one of the millions of people experiencing these deep and unresolved feelings? According to the survey last 2011 of the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 93 suicides cases for every 100,000 Filipinos. This means that the country suffers from intense depression. On the other hand, a 2012 World Happiness Report claimed that the Philippines ranked 103rd in 155 countries they surveyed in Southeast Asia. Some of the lives were wasted because they were not given the attention, they were hardly noticed. Because there are instances that these people had no one to turn to or there’s no shoulder to cry on for them. Now, people seek counseling so that they can air the problems they have in life. But there are some who finds it quite expensive, so they find an alternative medium. The answer to their dilemma is to seek for good advice from their favorite disc jockeys. You do not have to pay for a high price, what you need to do is just call, alongside that; they will also play the music that perfectly suit your life’s situation.
Last January 14, 2013 Kuya Daniel , known as Mr. Public Service and CEO of UNTVChannel,  started the new radio program Dear Kuya which is aired every Mondays to Fridays at 9:00am to 12nn. DearKuya is aired over UNTV radio La Verdad 1350kHz.  Various stories are sent through emails or letters which are delivered to the radio station’s address. The main objective of the program is to give advices responding to the different problems of people. The difference of DearKuya from other radio programs is that the advice given prior to the problem is biblically based. From 9am to 11am, there is a Q and A portion, wherein Kuya Daniel will throw a frequently asked scenario and then Bro. Eli will answer in Biblical basis. When the clock strikes at 11am till 12nn, the next segment is the live drama, using the story that also came from the audience. Afterwards, Bro. Eli will answer the question of the sender and he will read verses that are applicable and appropriate to the story. The actors are from La Verdad Christian College-Caloocan, they are composed of Meryll Lopez, Jerolf Acaba, Macky Libradilla, Angeline Casil, 3rd year students of La Verdad Christian College-Caloocan. Some staffs are also students, Mae Cortez and Reena Ritz Dela Cruz; they are in charge of the production. One of the voice talents is an instructor from the said school named Mr. John Erick De Ocampo, also now as Teacher Jeck. There are also times when some students from the 1st and 2nd year were invited to be voice talents. When listeners give their feedbacks about the story, there are also people who request copies of the Holy Scriptures and Kuya Daniel will grant their request by giving the Bible to the house of the ones who have requested a copy. One of the aims of the program is for the people to learn reading the Bible and see it as a manual of instruction for everyday life.  The chosen story will serve as “letter for the month”, wherein the sender will won a worth of P10, 000.
The stories mostly played were really touching. There is a story about a boy who seeks for his long lost father, only to found out that his father is his grandfather. His mother was raped by his biological father that is why he hated his son so much. As I listen to these stories and hear the answers from Bro. Eli, I was really amazed on how he relates it in the words of the Bible. This new program helps people in need and those who experience shortcomings in their lives. It gives the listeners and supporters a thought of not losing hope. So, if you are one of the million people who needs a shoulder to cry on. Try sending your stories to Dear Kuya and you will feel the contentment of Bro. Eli’s answers from the Holy Scriptures.

Isang Araw Lang: A Movie Review

Isang Araw Lang: (Just One Day)
At the first thought you might be wondering what does the story is all about and why they come up to this title. Isang araw lang, is actually an advocacy of Kuya Daniel Razon, which focus on helping people and doing public service and to start it in just one day. It was shown last July 2009 at the PICCPlenary hall in Pasay City. It was also aired on local television which is UNTV last April 8, 2012. But it still not too late for you if you still have not seen the movie yet. It was called an “indie film” for it was not shown nationwide in the mainstream film industry and it was produced not for business purposes. On the other hand, foreigners who come to watch this were very delighted for it was able to show its message and advocacy through the film. You don’t need a high-cost production if your objective is not only for entertainment, rather sharing morale to people. In my observation, there are many fictional movies that people love to see, but this movie was produced with good intentions not to earn money for them. I was overwhelmed for this project because the proceeds of these are for the La Verdad students. There are students who are eager to study despite having been insufficient with finances and monetary needs. Because of this, Bro. Eli and Bro. Daniel spear-headed the establishment of La VerdadChristian College, which offers free tuition fees, uniforms, books and even free meals for its students. The students surely benefit much from this project.
About the story of Isang Araw Lang, there is a man named Kuya Daniel, jeepney driver who works hard to sustain the needs of his adopted orphans. He is a man that shows public service to people. He also had his side-kick named Johnny, the man that seems quite reckless and accident-prone but his character also added comedy in the story. Kuya Daniel helps people in need, though there are times it means sacrificing his part of the labor he had given, he still do it without complaints. The orphans were treated lovingly, they go to school, and they have food to eat and a home to dwell in. But most importantly they were taught by Kuya Daniel. He discusses to the children that they must always behave. Just like in real life, villains and antagonists are always present in every story. First, there is the man who had always wanted to end up the brotherly-kindness of Kuya Daniel, Ka RenĂ©, played by Ka Rene in real life. His aim is to take advantage of the members of their small organization. Besides him, there is also Congressman Ricardo, portrayed by a good veteran actor Rey “PJ” Abellana, who is involved in a syndicate that enslaves children and he is also a man engaged in different unlawful activities. He organized a so called “charitable” program for the orphans, including the ones that Kuya takes care of; unfortunately it was all for publicity and self-aggrandizement. Of course this is not what Kuya wanted so he stopped the evil plans of the congressman. The antagonist of the story makes a way to continue his sinister plans so he kidnapped the poor children and even Kuya Daniel. The Good Samaritan was tortured and beaten-up, however he did not avenged his oppressors. With the help of an old friend who is a soldier that Kuya met in the army, Colonel Cuevas a role portrayed by a good actor Emilio Garcia, helped Kuya to free the children and teach Congressman Ricardo a lesson.
It a must-see film because it is full of moral and virtues. So, bored and tired of watching Sci-Fi movies? This is the time to call the attention of your whole family for this is worth watching. A kid in elementary grade will watch the movie and get the essence of it; it is a movie for the young, the old and the middle-aged! Maybe the whole story did not happened in real life. But I can assure you, that public service which was been continually working by Kuya Daniel Razon and Bro.Eli Soriano will probably justify what you have seen in the movie. They conduct an –everyday free clinic, maintain a free-tuition school, and they keep a transient house which benefitted a lot of homeless people. They are propagating the words of God that helped people in different ways and situation. As a movie watcher you, yourself can proved how the Goodness of God poured to these two men. In such way they pay it forward to many people who are helpless. A movie or a reality of life, most definitely, public service and kindness to others, especially the less-fortunate must always be the core principle of our everyday lives.

THE BLIND SIDE: A MOVIE REVIEW ON THE STORY OF MICHAEL OHER

People are hooked watching movies, even if it is not realistic. We are accustomed of stories like The Avengers; the vampire stories which are very mainstream especially the one involving the relationship between a woman and a man living in the underworld who has supernatural abilities. However, there are movie lovers like me who is fond of watching “true to life stories” or “based-on a true story” types of film. Each one of us can relate ourselves on the movies we watched. According to Tony Schwartz’s theory “resonance”, when someone watched television, listen to a radio or even see an advertisement if we found out that we can easily get to relate ourselves and remember something in the past that match what we see, there is a resonance. Now why do I tell this? It’s just because I can also remember things from my past when I watch a certain film and maybe you too experienced it. If you are a sports lover, I am sure whether you are successful or not in the field you are into, you will definitely love the film by John LeeHancock. But do not you, those who are not very much in to sports will also embrace this good movie produced.
A heartfelt, mellow-dramatic and a must-see film, entitled “The Blind Side” casting SandraBullock, Tim McGraw and Aaron Quintana. The latter portrayed the role of Michael Oher, a football player, whose big bulk and ample physique enables him to strike and knock-out his adversaries with great ease. He is now a successful football player who was officially adopted by Mrs. Leigh Anne and Mr. Sean Tuohy. They are also the reason for Oher’s scholarship at The University ofMississippi or Ole Miss. He is also lucky to be with the children of the Touhy couple, SJ played by Jae- Head and Collins played by Lily Collins. The chronological arrangement of the movie was plotted perfectly and elaborately. Ever since, I was always touched by a family-oriented story, just like “The Blind Side” which was actually based on the book “The Blind Side: Evolution of a game” was written by Michael Lewis. It showed that there are still people in the society who are not after the physical appearance or the culture of who they will lend their help to. The moral of the story taught me to be more sensitive with others’ social status in life and to have the need to help others without any favor in return. Football is a game in America which is intently for man with a strong-build up. Having a clear mind is also needed in order to win and compete fully strong. There are also mockers not only in the audience but also in the actual game. Your opponents will try to turn you down so that you will lose your concentrations; “stick and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” quoted Mrs. Touhy. Words are always a deadly weapon. These are the common scenarios; Michael Oher is facing difficulties when he is in the game. At first, he encounters failure. He is always aggressive but his actions were in a wrong move. With the help of SJ Touhy, he was trained in a one-on one football lesson. The success of the story will not be complete without the woman who is very compassionate in helping Michael Oher. She is dedicated, eager and loving who wanted to teach someone and also learn back from that someone. Had it not been for Ms. Leigh Ann Touhy, Michael will always stays as if he see himself as nothing. The character of Mrs. Touhy that had always been at Michael’s back especially on his downsides showed how a loving parent is. The role was been justified with the acting of Bullock, whose performance touched my heart. She has been in different roles and different character approaches but she is a winner for me in this film. Professionally played but not too stiffed, she showed the real Ms. Tuohy and on how it act as a supportive parent with her kids. The supporting roles also of her husband, Sean was just appropriate for the character given to Tim McGraw. You will also like the acting of Jae-Head for he is funny and witty.
I hope that I did not spoil your moment in order to see the film. You might be guessing and eventually trying to come up on a bunch of answers why the film was entitled “The Blind Side” when you finished watching the movie; it is easy to conclude and agree of the title. But what if it had different meanings? I had kept my thoughts on how it was entitled; I figured it out of the box. Every successful player has their own story, maybe it is boring for others but it is worth for some people. We are in a cycle in which sometimes we are blind to see what we can share and teach others, and most of the time we learned from them. I hope you will enjoy the movie “The Blind Side” and as you watch it, carefully listen to the voice over because sometimes it seems unimportant. But Sandra Bullock has a clue to say that is related to the whole story. She says “to protect the quarter back of what he can’t see, to protect his blind side.”
